Adriance was involved with thepromotion of railroads and canals, and he was a deputy for the CommissaryDepartment and a county commissioner during the Civil War. John Adriance, a native of Troy, New York, went to Texas in 1835. After participating in the Texas Revolution, he was engaged in the mercantile business, first with Cyril Beardslee at Columbia from 1836 to 1839 and then with Morgan L. Smith with whom he carried on business with foreign ports and owned and operated Waldeck Plantation.
